The Anthony Shaw collection is currently on loan at York Art Gallery, and it’s well worth a visit. Occupying a relatively modest space on the upper floor, and curated with a mind for Shaw’s preferred domestic setting, the space is packed with great pieces – from ceramics to paintings, it’s a cornucopia for the senses. Shaw’s voice echoes through the space, explaining how as a collector of art, he selects pieces based on how he feels about a work, in contrast to strictly aesthetic considerations. From a personal perspective, I found myself smiling as I wondered through this very sensual and personal space, there are so many pieces that I loved immediately… unusual to have such a condensed set of boxes all being ticked simultaneously. Look out for the beautiful photograph of Gordon Baldwin’s Shropshire studio.
