PROFILE

I tend toward expressive, gestural mark-making that affords the greatest freedom, experimentation and innovation within abstract painting. I am interested in the existential and the metaphysical, which finds expression in my work. Calligraphic overtones point to the oriental arts and zen philosophy, while the raw aspects reflect my love of the anarchic within graffiti. Textural layering is an important part of the process, while simultaneously considering composition from a geometric stance. Texture varies from watermark and print impression, to neurotic scribble, fragmenting paint and the hammer of obliteration. I aim for tension between fluidity and structure, the transcendent and the profane, mirroring the push-pull of ordinary existence. Spontaneity and the element of chance are critical to my practice, allowing for bold leaps in aesthetic direction.

I began exploring abstract painting in 1999 while working in design. My attraction to certain artists reflect the aspects of painting and collage that most interest me, such as the work of Antoni Tapies, Victor Pasmore, Hans Hartung, Christopher Wool, Pierre Soulages, Bruce Nauman, Malevich, among many others.

  1. I share your quest for “the purpose of experiencing the quiddity of being and existence”
Interior pilgrimage is painful, solitary and it seems that never ends, but it is the only way to find that beam of light that dissipates our darkness.

    • Well, profoundly put Marcelo, I feel it in your photography. I will ponder these things at Machu Picchu next week – I will catch up with your latest shots when I get back. Thank you for taking the time to comment, I really appreciate it. V
