The Anthony Shaw collection is currently on loan at York Art Gallery, and it’s well worth a visit. Occupying a relatively modest space on the upper floor, and curated with a mind for Shaw’s preferred domestic setting, the space is packed with great pieces – from ceramics to paintings, it’s a cornucopia for the senses. Shaw’s voice echoes through the space, explaining how as a collector of art, he selects pieces based on how he feels about a work, in contrast to strictly aesthetic considerations. From a personal perspective, I found myself smiling as I wondered through this very sensual and personal space, there are so many pieces that I loved immediately… unusual to have such a condensed set of boxes all being ticked simultaneously. Look out for the beautiful photograph of Gordon Baldwin’s Shropshire studio.

I volunteer in this space and think your observation about the collection as a “cornucopia for the senses” is perfect. Something I love about the collection is how visually arresting some of the pieces are (i.e the Jameson), whereas others are more subtle yet still as striking on closer inspection. Thanks so much for this!
Hi Lorna, it’s a special collection for sure, I would love to see more. Thank you for taking the time to comment, much appreciated. You’re in great company, Anthony Shaw was also very kind to respond to this blog, a wonderful surprise. Enjoy your volunteer work!
