PERFECT STORM: LYRICAL | part I

January 25, 2017 by Art & Photography

PERFECT STORM: COLLABORATION | MARTIN DAVIES & VESNA MILINKOVIC PERFECT STORM: LYRICAL | part I  → The months leading up to December 2016 were some of the toughest I’ve experienced on a personal level, paralleling the emotions I had experienced when my father passed away in 1984 – my metaphorical car had careered off the cliff and I found myself free-falling into the abyss. As my plummet slowed, I came to a point of zero gravity, suspended like a rain drop in mid flow, […]

HEPWORTH Wakefield

January 18, 2017 by Art & Photography

Playing catch-up from back end of 2016, feeling like I only scratched the surface during my visit to the Hepworth Wakefield gallery. The location is compelling, rushing water over tangled branches and river rubbish, wide open spaces, high ceilings and light-filled… that is the church of Barbara Hepworth, patron saint of British sculpture. A gallery jewel in the crown of the north, and master mini-mecca when it comes to contemporary art. If you haven’t done this artist’s pilgrimage yet, then […]

HOLY ISLE

January 11, 2017 by Art & Photography

I seem to be having an unprecedented number of life-changing experiences of late, my Christmas on the Holy Isle is one of them – it’s not called the Holy Isle by chance. Last autumn, my life went into reverse gear, or so I thought. Turns out it was more of a re-boot. Nevertheless, it was time to get out of dodge. So I followed up on a friend’s recommendation and stayed at the Holy Isle, off the coast of Arran, […]

21 days in TAMIL NADU

November 2, 2016 by Art & Photography

I spent most of October in Tamil Nadu, India, celebrating Navaratri, festival of the Divine Mother (Durga Shakti). We were based at the foot of Arunachala holy mountain, one of the five most sacred places in India. A last minute trip, yet this turned out to be my most memorable life experience to date – Tamil Nadu is magical and the people are extraordinary. Here is a tiny taster of some of my favourite moments… click to enlarge & scroll… Namaste ∞

Modern Art OXFORD

September 12, 2016 by Art & Photography

Recently on show at Modern Art Oxford, It’s Me To The World, including work by Mohammed Qasim Ashfaq and Richard Long… A polished graphite circle reflects from above a chalk-white linear labyrinth. Both SHIFT and Walking a Labyrinth are technically two-dimensional works and yet transcend the confines of 2-D. SHIFT by Mohammed Qasim Ashfaq, reflects light and appears to hover like an ethereal portal or UFO, perceptually breaking free from the white gallery wall upon which it has been created. The […]

STARS

August 31, 2016 by Art & Photography

STARS | 2016 | Indian ink, paper | dimensions: 55 x 55 cm details… STARS | detail I STARS | detail II Second in the series of a project I’ve had a mind to do for over a year. Freestyle Indian ink work, digitally remastered in kaleidoscope style to create this mandala illustration. The mandala is a geometric design representing the universe, a symbol of metaphysical union – the form demonstrates balance and a centre point within a circle. ℘

The Box That Never Closes

August 26, 2016 by Art & Photography

The Box That Never Closes | Michael Craig-Martin | 1967 | minimalist sculpture | gloss wood photograph by Vesna Milinkovic-Cotter The late 60’s feel of this sculpture caught my eye immediately – the geometric form, creamy white gloss surface and rectilinear woodgrain outline are an aesthetic dream. Note the highly conceptual approach to this work, reminding me of Craig-Martin’s American contemporary Bruce Nauman, both born in 1941. This is a very special minimalist piece, even the title matches Nauman’s matter-of-fact style in […]

Transcendent

August 23, 2016 by Art & Photography

Transcendent | 2016 | Indian ink, paper | dimensions: 55 x 55 cm Transcendent | detail I Transcendent | detail II A project I’ve had a mind to do for over a year. Freestyle Indian ink work, remastered to form this mandala. The beauty of this particular work is that the high res scan is at 600dpi, which means it can be reproduced at up to 2.5m in diameter. It takes about two hours to paint the initial section by hand, then […]
