66 Yellow

March 22, 2016 by Art & Photography

66 Yellow | acrylic on paper |  30 x 40 cm (12 x 16″) | March 2016 I used to hate the colour yellow as a kid, primarily because my mother liked it. To me, yellow was gaudy, crass, loud, clumsy, potentially violent and unsophisticated. However, over the years I’ve grown to like it when I’m in the right mood. Yellow experienced a revival in recent times, and came to be considered a modern colour, particularly in contemporary design. Monet’s kitchen […]

KAROCURO

March 18, 2016 by Art & Photography

Ceramic abstract sculpture Karocuro – a five week project and a first for me. I borrowed inspiration from British artist Anthony Caro, in particular his sculptures in hand-made Japanese paper, by rolling out thin layers of clay, folding and layering. The round detail with a hole at the rear of the sculpture is inspired by the work of Barbara Hepworth. I’m not big on planning or sketching in advance, preferring to create on the go, which is essential in order to maintain […]

TATE Britain: Cluett Lowe Pasmore Hodgkin

January 29, 2016 by Art & Photography

Victor Pasmore, collage: Black Abstract 1963 Rachel Lowe, film: A Letter to an Unknown Person no.2 1998 Howard Hodgkin, painting: Porlock 2012 Shelagh Cluett, sculpture: Flux III 1979 The striking geometric aspect of Pasmore’s Black Abstract is brilliantly balanced with the organic, animal-like pattern – while the placement of the vertical strand resolves the right side dip of the painted panel by topping out level with its left corner – beautifully conceived. Porlock by Hodgkin strangely mirrors the Pasmore, a […]

Newport St Gallery: John Hoyland Paintings

January 25, 2016 by Art & Photography

The day after having discovered the John Hoyland documentary ‘Six Days In September‘, I learned that a series of Hoyland paintings were being shown at the new Damien Hirst gallery on Newport Street, London. I was interested to see the work, and the new gallery, a 12-15 minute walk north of Vauxhall tube station, past the Queen’s Head pub-turned-bistro, once owned by Charlie Chaplin’s dad. The Newport Street Gallery is a spacious environment on two floors connected by an architecturally elegant winding staircase. […]
