“In the presence of someone who wounds the mind and soul.” Shots from the film Mia Madre by director Nanni Moretti… A particular moment in a particular film that strikes a pitch-perfect chord. “In the presence of someone who wounds the mind and soul” is being translated from Latin, yet the content suddenly hangs heavy in the air with meaning. Three generations of women, one learning, one dying and one questioning the nature of her reality. •

Some time ago I discovered that I prefer photographs that give a personal impression of a place, or subject, in contrast to the perfect & beautiful shot. I feel this is because ultimately perfection is dull, and beautiful can be boring. This shift in values, taste & perception was catalysed by No Matter Where You Go, a small collectable photo book by Jun Kawabata. I bought the book many years ago while living in London. Kawabata has a penchant for bad lighting, […]

PERFECT STORM: COLLABORATION | MARTIN DAVIES & VESNA MILINKOVIC PERFECT STORM: LANDSCAPE | part III → This final group of charcoal drawings are reminiscent of nature in one form or another. In Perfect Storm XVI I see the unfurling fern, while IX presents a more literal leaf shape – in XIV, mountain peaks and the waters edge, while in IV I see a bird’s eye view of the Holy Isle retreat – the cross for me represents the Buddhist shrine […]

PERFECT STORM: COLLABORATION | MARTIN DAVIES & VESNA MILINKOVIC PERFECT STORM: LYRICAL | part I → The months leading up to December 2016 were some of the toughest I’ve experienced on a personal level, paralleling the emotions I had experienced when my father passed away in 1984 – my metaphorical car had careered off the cliff and I found myself free-falling into the abyss. As my plummet slowed, I came to a point of zero gravity, suspended like a rain drop in mid flow, […]

Playing catch-up from back end of 2016, feeling like I only scratched the surface during my visit to the Hepworth Wakefield gallery. The location is compelling, rushing water over tangled branches and river rubbish, wide open spaces, high ceilings and light-filled… that is the church of Barbara Hepworth, patron saint of British sculpture. A gallery jewel in the crown of the north, and master mini-mecca when it comes to contemporary art. If you haven’t done this artist’s pilgrimage yet, then […]

I spent most of October in Tamil Nadu, India, celebrating Navaratri, festival of the Divine Mother (Durga Shakti). We were based at the foot of Arunachala holy mountain, one of the five most sacred places in India. A last minute trip, yet this turned out to be my most memorable life experience to date – Tamil Nadu is magical and the people are extraordinary. Here is a tiny taster of some of my favourite moments… click to enlarge & scroll… Namaste ∞
